Sharp box

A sharp box is a container that is specifically designed for the containment of any sharp material, equipment, or apparatus (syringes, intravenous catheters and blades, etc) that is used at health care units, hospitals, and laboratories. Our sharp boxes are very reliable, easy to handle, good capacity, and leakage proof. They are specially designed for the proper containment of sharps to ensure the least chances of any needle stick injury. Dailymag is re-known for its durable and eco-friendly products. Our sharp bins are made of very protective material which assures both insides as well as outside leakage proofing. These sharp bins remain stable and also contain very fine locked lids. Moreover, these high-quality sharp boxes are available at a very affordable cost that does not becomes a burden on our customers.

There are some general features of our Sharp boxes that completely meet the worldwide followed health care guidelines. These are as follow:

  • Sharp boxes are resistant to any puncture or breakage, both from outside as well as from inside of the box.
  • These are made of high quality and heavy duty plastic.
  • Cardboard sharp boxes are also available.
  • They prevent any leakage or spillage.
  • Good capacity for containing sharps produced per day at a specific site.
  • Remain upright and stable while in use.
  • Contain proper opening which prevents any sharp material to come out
  • Properly labeled and color coded (mostly yellow color)
  • Contain biohazard indication signs

Importance of sharp biomedical waste handling:

Sharp biomedical waste must be handled with extreme care. The Sharp biomedical waste usually contains used needles syringes, ampules, broken injections, lancets, blades, and other surgical tools which are either disposable or treatable for again usage, but in both cases, there is a risk of injury. According to the estimation of the Centre of Disease Control (CDC), healthcare workers get almost 385,000 sharp based injuries annually. These injuries result in a higher risk of blood-borne viral transmission; among the viral infections, the risk of HBV infection is highest (6 to 30%) as compared to HCV and HIV which have a risk percentage of 2% and 0.3% respectively. Most of the needle stick injuries occur in inpatient units and operation theaters. There six most renowned sharp devices that cause almost 70 to 80% of the total sharp injuries. These devices are syringes, suture needles, winged needles, catheters, phlebotomy needles, and scalpels. According to an estimation, the most affected medical occupation group in this regard is nurses, physicians, and technicians.

Importance of sharp boxes:

Food and Drugs Administration FDA highly recommend the placement of any sharp equipment in a sharp box immediately after use. A sharp container should always be present in a health care unit, hospital ward, operation theater, laboratories, and every other site where sharp material is supposed to be handled. These sharp containers are usually sealed with very hard and rigid walls to prevent even the least chances of any damage. Just like other waste containers, sharp boxes are also color coded I.e., either red or yellow with a prominent biohazard sign on them. a sharp box must be examined carefully and should be emptied when it has filled upto three-quarters of its total capacity.

Sharp boxes are usually available in two forms I.e., disposable and reusable. Disposable sharp boxes are disposed of along with the sharp biomedical waste present in them. These types of boxes are usually placed in restrooms and institution settings where the production of sharp waste is comparatively less. While in hospital settings and laboratories, reusable sharp boxes are mostly used because they can be used again after sterilization. Both types are sharp boxes are available at our company. Sometimes, simple plastic containers are also restricted for sharp containment. They can provide protection, but because of no proper lids, certain complications can occur. Therefore, we highly recommend you to have sharp boxes and containers for proper protection.

Sharp boxes are also color coded I.e., either red or yellow. Yellow sharp containers are mostly used all around the world except the United States where the color of sharp containers is mostly kept red. Yellow color, in biomedical waste indication, usually refers towards infectious material. As most of the sharps are used injections, IV catheters, lancets, and blades which somehow contain body fluids of patients and hence, is treated as pathogenic or infectious material. Besides color, a prominent biohazard sign is also printed on the sharp box as a warning for the person using it.

Precautions for using a sharp box:

Sharps boxes are designed for the proper facility and prevention of the handler, but sometimes misuse of sharp boxes can also cause injuries. Certain precautions should always be practiced while using a sharp box. These areas follow:

  • Sharp boxes must be examined at intervals; in case of any breakage of puncture, it should be replaced with an intact sharp box
  • Sharp container should always be placed near to site of sharp handling
  • It should always be placed in a stable position before use
  • It should not be stuffed completely (to its full capacity).
  • It must be emptied when it fills 3/4 of its volume.
  • If a sharp container becomes overfilled, a forceps or tong should be used to remove some material.
  • Sharp boxes should always be covered properly.

Advantage of using a sharp box:

All the health concerning associations and administrations such as the World Health Organization (WHO), FDA, CDC, and OSHA highly recommend the use of sharp boxes to ensure prevention from needle stick injuries. The use of sharp boxes reduces the chances of blood borne pathogenic infections I.e., HIV and HBV etc.

Our sharp boxes and containers are very useful because they reduce the extent of injuries i.e., it is evident that a sharp box contains infectious and pathogenic sharp material hence, it is handled with extra care as compared to the other biomedical waste containers. Dailymag is well known for providing high-quality eco-friendly reusable and reliable biomedical waste bins in a very competitive price range.
