To open a closed sharps container safely, it’s important to do so without risking injury. Here’s how you can approach it:

Check for a removable lid: Some sharps containers have a hinged lid or a screw-on top that can be opened. Look for a tab or area to unscrew or detach the lid.

Push or twist (if applicable): If the container has a locking mechanism, like a twist cap, gently twist it counterclockwise to release it. Some containers have a press-and-release feature, where you press a tab and then lift the lid.

Avoid force: If the lid is stuck, don’t force it. Instead, check for instructions on the container or contact the supplier or manufacturer for guidance.

Wear gloves: If you’re handling the container for disposal or sorting, it’s a good practice to wear gloves for protection.

If you need to dispose of it: If the container is full and you’re trying to close it to prevent spillage, many sharps containers have a special feature to permanently seal them when they are full. Make sure to check if the container has any mechanism that ensures it’s safely closed after being filled.

If dealing with a specific type of sharps container which have unique features, generally, tools such as screwdriver and plier is needed, and the sharps box cannot be restored to normal use after opening. After opening, observe the inside of the sharps box. There is no other purpose. The sharps box needs to be closed again and properly discarded.
